Everything You Need for a Safe and Comfortable Day on the Trail

Planning a hike in Romania? Whether you’re heading into the Bucegi, Apuseni, Făgăraș, or any other beautiful corner of the country, having the right gear can make the difference between a great adventure and an uncomfortable experience.

This list is focused on day hikes, but it can easily be adapted for multi-day trips.

🥾 Clothing & Footwear

Hiking boots or trail shoes – Waterproof and with good grip
Comfortable socks – Preferably wool or synthetic, not cotton
Lightweight hiking pants or leggings
Moisture-wicking shirt – Avoid cotton
Insulating layer – Fleece or softshell for cooler weather
Rain jacket or poncho – Weather can change fast in the mountains
Hat or cap – For sun protection
Buff or bandana – Multipurpose and useful in wind or sun
Light gloves or beanie – Even in summer, mountain air can be chilly

🎒 Essentials in Your Backpack

2L of water – Hydration is key! Bring more on hot days
Snacks – Nuts, dried fruit, protein bars, sandwiches
Map and compass or offline map apps like Maps.me or Gaia GPS
Sunscreen and lip balm
Sunglasses
Small first aid kit – Include blister care, antiseptic, and pain relief
Phone – Fully charged, with a portable power bank
Trash bag – Carry out everything you bring in
ID card / cash – Some huts or villages may not accept cards
Toilet paper or tissues – Nature calls!

Headlamp or flashlight – Even for day hikes, just in case
